Schools, like children, are usually not inherently good or bad. However, there are times when the fit between a child and their school is not right, and so the school may appear to be just that. A school that is right for one child, or even 200 children, is not necessarily one that is right for yours. But how do you know when the fit is wrong, and not simply the result of kids being kids?

Even kids who do not “love” school can be generally happy with a reasonably good school fit. When your child is miserable, you need to consider the possibility that it may be that the problem is with the school and not with your child at all. These several signs can help you decide if it’s time to look for better alternatives.

Signs Of A Poor School-Child Match

Your student should be engaged and generally happy with their school experience. The following may be a good sign that your child needs to look elsewhere for a more beneficial school-child fit.

Your child inexplicably hates or refuses to go to school. This means there is no good reason or new upset in the home that might cause this, and this happens after a reasonable adjustment period, not just in the first few weeks, as may be expected.

Little progress is being made. You do need to work with staff and have reasonable expectations for your child, but a lack of progress academically or socially is a sign to consider.

Your child is consistently bored with school, and/or shows a serious level of disinterest.

You do not believe your child is performing up to his or her academic ability. Not all children are straight-A students but you should be able to see measurable progress.

Your child feels misunderstood or unliked. When a child feels no one likes him or understands him, including staff and teachers, there may be a real reason behind it.

Your child fails to form lasting relationships. Although not all children will get along all of the time, or become close friends, your child should be able to make some lasting and consistent friends.

Symptoms of stress are apparent only when school is in session. If you feel your child is not his- or herself and is a “different kid” when school is out (vacations, weekends, etc), that may be a sign that they really do not feel they are themselves when in school, and that could be a serious problem.

Any child can fall subject to any one of these signs at one point or another, but a combination of factors or a serious continuation may indicate a bigger problem, and the need to seek other educational opportunities for your child.
